A bad cat doesn't have to rattle, it could be enough that the quality of the cat have diminished due to some kind of poisoning, either by lots of fuel or some other fuel injector treatments that was harmful to the cat.
If the same code comes up over and over again (P0420) mentioning that the effectivness of the cat has dropped, it could very well be a bad cat.
With the Tech 2 scanner it is possible to run a quick check of the cat (don't know if possible on 99 9-5). That check takes about 10 min if the car is warmed up.
