My 1999 9-5 got the disappearing pixel problem in both the SID unit and ACC unit displays in 2004 (thank you "Prince of Darkness" Lucas electronics..!!) and I lived (and cursed) with them for over a year. Although an avid DIY person, I never got around to attempting all the SaabNet well documented fix procedures (compression foam, ballpoint pen point pressure on contact strip, hot iron pressing, etc...) Do yourself a huge and money saving favor and look for a replacement unit on E-Bay. You'll have to first remove your radio unit with a standard DIN radio removal tool (looks like a pair of open ended overgrown paperclips attached with a chain) and then pull out with your hand and unplug the bad SID unit, then reverse the procedure to install the new SID and slide the radio back in. It will take you about two minutes to do.
I got both used SID and ACC units for a total of $190. That sure beats a total new cost of $750!!! I believe these came out of a 2001 9-5. The displays were perfectly clear. The only problems I had at first was the inability of the ACC unit to retain my preferred AUTO setting startup when I turned the car off, which eventually was remedied after numerous manual reprogramming attempts (described in your owner's manual) and the SID unfortunately continues to display "TIME FOR SERVICE" at startup no matter how many attempts to manually reprogram this out. I believe I may have to resort to a quick indie shop use of the proprietary Saab Tech II diagnostic and programming device. Best of Luck and May Your Displays Be Bright and Merry!! (belated Holiday Wishes..!!)
