I recently purchased front Akebono Euro pads and installed Zimmermann crossdrilled rotors on my 1999 9-5. My previous Brembo replacement rotors and supposedly ceramic formula pads combined to give extreme amounts of black dust and worn rotor surface. The parts shop who sold me the Akebonos warned me they would get eaten up by the crossdrilled rotors (cheese grater effect?) which I had gotten elsewhere. The German quality Zimmermann rotor drilled holes are chamfered. Not sure if I paid more for the Euro marketing name over the standard Akebono ceramic pad or the new Saab/Akebono pad, but after 1000 miles, I've got way less dust and the new pads seem to have gotten grippier after break in.

During installation, I did notice some gouging/grooving of the brake bracket sliding surface at the contact point with the metal ears of the pad. I attribute this to the age and 110 K mileage of my car, but also, the non-uniform face of the metal pad "ears" on most of the pads I've used (even on the new Akebonos) as a result of them being punched from sheet steel. For the price, I'd appreciate a little machining to flatten this metal edge down and distribute the large contact force more evenly and keep it from gouging the brake bracket sliding surface. Maybe this gouging explains some of the occasional "pop/crunch" noises I'd get when braking before. I did use a more liberal amount of hi-temp brake lubricant at these contact points and at the spring contact points this time. Any followup comments from Nick or others?
