The "sludge" remedy centers around using synthetic oil, and making sure it's changed at a 5k mile interval. And having the receipts as proof that it has been done.
Originally, in 2002 the 9-5 manual called for semi-synthetic oil. The "included" maintenance from SAAB utilized semi-syn, unless the owner paid the up-charge for full synthetic.
Using full synthetic oil since day 1 is the BEST thing you could have done...although some may take issue with 3,000 miles as being too frequent. But, hey..it's your car...and pampering it this way is your decision.
Presently, it seeems that a high quality FULL synthetic oil with A3/B3 is the preferred way to go. Mobil 1 0W-40 is one such oil.
Others on this BB prefer Mobil 1 SUV formula 5W-40 instead of the 0W-40 viscosity.
Not forgetting the AMSOIL products which can satisfy these requirements either.
I've never personally had any leaky seals from using synthetic oils, in my case primarily Mobil1 products for the last 23 years....
The predominant thinking today is that switching over to full synthetic oils of today does not seem to cause leaky seals...
Dick in Falls Church has written on this BB and this topic at length too if you'd like to search.
Good Luck.
