In NOV my 9-5 started to make a whirring/whining noise from the area around the oil filter. This sound occurs only at start up on a cold engine and disappears after 1-2 miles of driving. The sound varies with rpm not engine speed. Changed the oil & oil filter (only a 3000 mi interval) and the sound went away.

Now the sound is back and also the valve cover to pcv system connector broke and has left a slight stream of oil on the plastic engine cover. Changed the connector and the pcv valve and the noise still persists. Pcv hoses look good.

Any ideas?? What is adjacent to the oil filter to make this noise? I fear the dreaded sludge issue is slowly raising it ugly head as the timing chain has beed rattling since I bought the car at 58K mi (but not getting worse) and the turbo blew at 79K mi ....

I have always used M1 0W40. This Saab it becoming an expensive hobby ...
