If you oil pressure switch is leaking (common), it drips onto the cat and stinks...depending on the brand/formula it ranges from an old-fashioned burining oil smell to a more plastic/rubber smell with synthetic.
I have the dodgy switch, M1 0w40 is a decidedly rubber-burning smell whereas 15w50 is more of a plastic/asphalt stench. It just weeps, I doubt it would ever add up to enough to impact the oil level because just a couple drops makes alot of smell.
A bad switch will also give you whiffs of smoke is that exact area, too. The switch is in the block behind the starter.
