Re: Short belt conversion on 9-5 ? Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Short belt conversion on 9-5 ?, davids ![]() |
We still don't know if it is a good idea or not.
Some 9-5 seems to get a vibration/shudder when turning the steering wheel with the short belt configuration.
You can actually feel some vibrations even with the long belt but the short belt seems to magnify the problem.
The short belt is supposedly the official deal since the long belt part number is superseded to the short belt but I have heard some dealers that still use the long belt.
I don't think the fault lies in the short belt itself but more of a power steering pump (or steering rack) problem where that when the power steering pump/rack gets worn it creates more drag making the belt shudder due to the loss of that middle idler pulley.
I have never seen the same vibrations on the NG900 or 9-3 model with the short belt so it is something within the 9-5 model that is not right.
It for sure is a lot easier to install a short belt on the 9-5 since you don't need to deal with that pesky middle idler pulley but only need to replace the ribbed idler pulley and maybe the tensioner.
Lately, I have seen more and more worn out serpentine belt tensioner where the plastic/nylon washer between the static and moving part of the tensioner is worn. This will result in that the tensioner pulley start to tilt slightly and the belt slowly wanders further and further off the pulley.
