I just read all the threads about the tensioner failure.
I have a 95SE Turbo V^ 3.0 which I bought used at 65,000. At 100,000 miles the heater control box broke. I have heat everywhere except in the cockpit. I'm told that will cost $1,000 to fix including parts. I researched this online and found this should probably be a recall.
On the tensioner issue. The shop I have service this car told me at 100,000 I should have the timing belt replaced because if it breaks it will reuin the motor. I didn't and when I was having the brakes repaired at 125,000 miles they suggest this repair again, nothing ever said about a tensioner and I know nothing about cars or have no knowledge of this. I have the repair made "timing belt". 1 1/2 yrs and 25,000 miles later the tensioner breaks. I have it towed because it sounds serious. They have me and quote $3300. They take me back and show me the tensioner. They said they told me about this and they didn't. I am now suspicous. I ask around and all the people I talk to say they bundle the tensioner with the timing belt. They have the knowledge of this issue as they specialize in Saabs and other foreign cars. I push the issue and ask who the owner is and say they never mentioned the tensioner and at only $300 to save the engine I would have made the repair. With that said they take off $1,000. The next day I call again and say I think they should fix it for free or the cost of the tensioner since they should have sold me that and informed me about that. The cost goes down another $1,000. I talked to a mechanic from church and he says if you don't replace the tensioner with the timing belt the increase tension on the old pulles and bearings wont hold up. Everyone working on these cars is aware of this and are taking advantage of this. I think Saab is responsible and the people specializing in this cars know.
I am now considering contacting the owner and alerting of this problem and giving him a chance to make this right. If nothing is done I may take this to small claims. I hope I can make a difference. Maybe there is a way to alert every Saab owner of this problem. Yes, Saab could do a recall and say if you have had the timing belt replaced and not the tensioner you need the tensioner replaced.
PS. I love this car but Saab have over engineered it and dosen't stand behind a great car.
