Gasoline octane rating as measured in the UK/Europe is approximately 4-6 points higher than the octane rating as measured in the USA. The different test methods (UK/Europe uses the research octane number while the USA uses the average of the research octane + the motor octane numbers) give different octane ratings.
In the USA 'premium' is typically 91 octane, 'mid-grage' is typically 89 octane and 'regular' is typically 87 octane (all unleaded of course). The octane ratings in the USA will vary based on the part of the country, refinery, and various additives or required air quality/oxygenation components.
So the SAAB 9-5 200HP V6 will run on regular gasoline with 87 octane in the USA, but it will certainly not be running at maximum power output.
