The oil sludge question seems to be most critical. I purchased a 1999 9-5 with 65,000 miles from the original owner who kept good records (always taken to the dealer during the entire warranty period). I did the recommended head retorque while chasing down on oil leak, but saw only discoloring varnish under the valve cover, but no sludge. From the dealer records, I could see that the required oil change maintenance was always done, albeit at longer intervals than I now prefer to do it (3,500 miles) but also, that certain items that seem to be buggy for this first 1999 American model year (previously released one year earlier in Europe) were addressed under warranty. The engine management computer module had been replaced due to internal solder corrosion problems from a poor gasketing design and the DIC (Direct Ignition Cassette) I believe was also replaced under warranty. This unit basically consists of a bank of dedicated ignition coils, one for each of the four engine spark plugs. Other than that, I had a blown turbocharger at 83,000 miles which I saved a lot of money on by rebuilding it myself. As others have suggested at this SaabNet website, you might find a friendly Saab shop who could trace this car's maintenance and repair records if done by another dealer. Consumer Reports seems to have given the 9-5 an acceptable rating, even more so since 1999.

You'll find lesser niggling things eventually like fading instrument display pixels and possibly a heater blower motor replacement, but on balance with the safety, luxury, performance, versatility and classic but timeless styling, the 9-5 is a great car!! This SaabNet website has many willing adherents ready to offer you good advice on most questions and problems you might have with the 9-5 model or any other Saab.

Best of Luck!
