Poor grip on brakes

Had to stop short this last Saturday to avoid an accident, and noticed that I don't have the same firmness on my brake pedal as before. It takes a while after pressing on the brakes for the car to stop. I did a visual inspection of all the pads which are still in place, and also checked the fluid which looks fine. I don't hear noises when I press on the pedal, and no warning indicators on the dash board light up. It almost feels like the power in the power break system is gone. Can some one tell me what else I can check or try before taking the car in for service? I had the pads and rotors replaced about 3-5 months ago, and this is the 1st time I notice this problem. Thanks,
