The tiny micro chip is buried somewhere inside the push button part of the key (2001 and up keys) and as long as it sends an ok signal to the TWICE immobilizing circuit, it's ok and can be used to program more keys/remotes.

So it is the micro chip (in working key) that opens the TWICE computer but it is the pushing of a button on the new key/remote (until safety belt sign flashes) while programming that seals the deal and makes the new key and remote accepted by TWICE.
