I hope someone can give me an idea on what happened.
My 9-5 died this week on the freeway about 150 miles from home. Everything was running good, I had no error lights on, temp was fine, etc. It was due an oil-change, but less then 50 miles over the 3,000 miles since the last oil change, so I don’t think that had anything to do with it. I had checked and topped off all the fluids just before we left and everything was fine. I have a very small oil drip from one of the seals, I may have to add a quart of oil once between oil changes.
I was driving on the freeway at about 75 MPH just after dark, when I started to lose power. Looking in my mirror I see a large cloud of white smoke. I can start the car now but it has no power and smoke just pours out the exhaust. My fluid levels still look fine, anyone have any ideas? I don’t see oil in the water, which I would expect from a blown head gasket, my oil looks fine, and we only have about 84,000 miles on it. The car has a 2.3t engine, we are the second owner, and as far as I can tell from the records it has been well maintained.
The brother of my wife’s friend is going to take a look at it for us. He is thinking the turbo blow on it. I’ve worked on other cars, but have never dealt with a turbo before, so it is a new area for me. Does this sound right, and if so what should I expect to get one replaced. We got the SAAB because our research indicated it would be a reliable car. We got it for my wife because she is in a wheel chair, and I work out of state a lot. I wanted a car that I did not have to worry about her getting stuck on the side of the road during a snow storm, and having no way out.
If it is a turbo, is there anything special we should do to help take care of it?
Thanks Ed
