The poster was correct, but told only half the story. There is a small plastic shaft within the heater box which can break, causing the modulating door or damper to not function, and resulting in a Code 8 alarm message.
Because of the location of this shaft, the entire heater box had (note past tense) to be removed to replace this small inexpensive part. Total cost for the 8+ hours of labor to do this job was often over $1,000 USD.
Buck, a certified Saab Tech and frequent poster on this board, developed an inexpensive repair (under $5USD) for this failure. The necessary parts for this cheap repair can be hand frabicated from plastic pipe bought from a local home improvement center, or the repair parts kit can be purchased from on-line discount parts suppliers (http://www.thesaabsite.com is one source).
I don't know what the poster meant by "easy to avoid". Others have hypothesized the root cause of the shaft breakage is entanglement of the drive mechanism with an underdash wiring bundle. But it may just be the result of over stressed material or fatigue, and there is not easy cure for that.
