When I bought my '99 9-5 Sportwagon (2.3L, auto tranny) almost 3 years ago (37K off-lease), it was still under factory warranty for 6 months. I bought an aftermarket warranty from "Preferred Warranties" through my indie. It cost me $1,000 for a 5 year/100,000 mile contract with a $50 deductable per incident. To date it has just paid for itself after covering a wheel bearing replacement, throttle body replacement and a DIC cassette replacement. I have only 53K on this car and 2+ years left on the warranty. Everything from here on out is a plus.
