How DIY friendly are 9-5s? Posted by iveand [Email] (#3155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from iveand) on Mon, 20 Feb 2006 10:45:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am not a hard core gear head, but I do enjoy doing what I can myself. I have done a fair amount of maintenance / trouble shooting on my NG900, and have enjoyed it. Alternator (voltage regulator) replacement, "short belt" mod, tie rod ends, brake stuff, and then a whole host of stuff related to hard starting in the cold: ends up it was the crank position sensor, but also replaced fuel regulator, and did a lot of debugging with a volt meter to test out the fuel pump. I have also been in the engine to re-torque head bolts and scrub out some beginning stages of sludge from prior owner -- don't worry, running Mobil 1 now.
Bottom line: tinkering is fun and manageable. Even a clutch job wouldn't be beyond me (should it not be during the winter). The diagnostic tracking down of electrical issues was the most challenging, but I ended up solving it where a saab indy missed it: very satisfying.
With the 9-5, how much can you keep doing without the computerized diagnostic equipment, etc. How dependent are you on the shop as compared with earlier Saabs? I know when to call in help, but I like to do all I can before it gets to that point.
As a note: I would certainly like the 4 cylinder, as it would give more engine compartment room, and I am already somewhat familiar with the 2.3L engine.
