I had an issue with the tailgate, where it would lock, but the microswitch that detects the locking state was broken so the car would think it wasnt locked and attempt to relock it every time you started off from a standstill, plus the rear interior lights on all the time.
When you lock (by key or remote) do you hear the solenoid operating? If not then the solenoid is broken/disconnected and needs replacement. If you do hear the solenoid then the culprit is either the latch mechanism is broken such that the solenoids movements have no effect, or (and this is the best case scenario) the rod linking the solenoid to the latch has come off - which could happen as it is a snap in. Your best bet is to remove the inside cover off the hatch (the carpet cover thing), which is just a matter of undoing the pop in retainers and the torx bolts holding the inside grab handle, then seeing whats going on inside. Eminently DIYable, and the tailgate latch is a $160 replacement part, solenoid I have no idea. I have heard dealers quoting 2 hours labor to do the latch, I did it in 1/2 hour, and I dont claim any skills above the amateur bodger level, check my prev posts for more detail, and I think I still have some photos of the job.
