What are you unscrewing? Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: front lo-beam bulb replacement- help!!, supersaab, Thu, 9 Mar 2006 15:22:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I also have a 2000 9-5 Aero and a 2004 9-5 ARC. Replacing headlight bulbs are nothing new, or difficult. It takes 2-5 minutes.
1) Don't unscrew anything. It is not necessary to remove the headlight unit from the car. Put all of the screws back.
2) Unscrew the cover from the back of the headlight unit. This requires only your hand. Counter-clockwise works best.
3) Pull the connector off of the back of the bulb. This may be a little tight...so some improvisation my be necessary.
4) Note the position of the bulb. The small tab on the periphery points up.
5) Unhook the wire retainer and pivot it away.
6) Gently slid out the bulb. Usually, a burnt out bulb will be obvious. The filament will be dangling or gone. Comparison to the new bulb helps.
Test the bulb: You can test the bulb you removed with an ohm meter. Lacking that, you can bridge the terminals with a 9 volt battery. A good bulb will glow bright orange....or not at all (bad bulb).
7) Do not touch the bulb with your fingers. Oil deposits from your fingers will shorten the life of the bulb. Wipe with a soft cloth and only hold the bulb by the base.
8) Put everything back together and test. Remember the tab on the base of the bulb points up. If the headlight doesn't work you may have a problem with the headlight control relay ($135.00)...also commonly referred to as the "orange relay".
