New Saab owner or owner of a new Saab?
If you are the new owner of a used Saab, you must obtain a maintenance record showing oil changes every 5000 miles for life using either fully synthetic or a high quality synthetic blend to eliminate concern. If you can not obtain that, the engine has to be inspected. The easiest way is to use a wire and scrape out the bottom of the oil pan when the oil is changed. If any little granules come out, the engine is sludged to some degree. If you don't get any, then the car is probably "clean" although you might have missed seeing or scraping them. For absolute certainty, the oil pan would need to be removed and the pan and screen inspected.
If you are the owner of a new Saab, simply change the oil every 5000 miles or every year, using a fully synthetic oil, preferably one with "40" in the viscosity range.
