If I remember correctly, the EV-1 was a DC electric vehicle. At that time, I could have built one for around $10K and that would have included buying a Vega or a Citation (keeping it GM). GM built the EV-1 because they were forced to make a low emissions vehicle. So they did it as cheap as possible. The people that leased them were ripped off, they paided way too much money for the lowest electric vehicle technology at that time. GM purchased Hughs for the technology and look what they did to that company.
What would be cool is to find a vintage SAAB and convert it to a AC Electric Vehicle and use it as a commuter car. But would we be cleaning up the environment? No, because we would get the power from the local electric company and they use dino fuels or nuclear. Ok, lets change that to a Aero drive train into a vintage SAAB.
