I happen to have an '04 9-3 convertible loaner right now while my '03 9-5 is with the dealer, and I like the 9-5 better. It's got a lot more room, more power (though the 9-3 has not felt underpowered at all), and just seems more luxurious. We had the in-laws for the last few days (the 9-5 went into the dealer halfway through their visit), and fitting four adults into the 9-3 convertible is a challenge. It's a much smaller vehicle with somewhat less cabin, and vastly less trunk space. Taking the top down is nice - the weather cooperated the last few days - but having owned a convertible before (an '01 Mitsubishi Eclipse), I know that the convertible top got most of it's use during the first year. Once the initial thrill wore off, I had road noise, rubber maintenance issues, and wear-and-tear of the fabric top to be concerned with. Not that it's not worth it - but you never think about that stuff when you're first taking a test drive with the top down. I'd say do like Brooks recommends - keep your 9-5 and get the convertible, too! I think you'd miss your 9-5 if you got rid of it. Even my wife, who loved our old convertible, said "I think I like the 9-5 better. When do we get it back?"
Hope this helps,
-Dan
