Long story short, have the dealer check it out.
The same thing was happening with my car ('03 9-5 Aero)- at first I thought it was no big deal, but I recently ran out of fuel on the highway and had to get towed because the gauge was reading incorrectly. In my car, the fuel light would often stay illuminated even after filling up - and only show the actual fuel level after the needle dropped to the absolute bottom of the range. Monday of last week, I had to call roadside assistance becuase the gauge read 1/8 of a tank before leaving to meet with a client 20 miles away. About halfway there, the fuel light came on, and then another 3 miles or so later, the car started losing power, check engine light started flashing, and I pulled over just as the engine died. About a month ago, the same thing happened (including stalling on the freeway), but the dealer said it was the IDM (which they replaced).
This time, the dealer called and said that I essentially ran out of gas. I described the above symptoms, and asked them to check the fuel gauge to make sure it was working correctly. Sure enough, they had to replace the tank because of a broken baffle.
As I told my wife, "I didn't think the fuel gauge thing was a big deal until I had to merge across four lanes of traffic going 80mph with no engine, and then miss a client meeting while waiting for a tow."
I have to note, this has been my third experience with the SAAB dealership in Sacramento, and they've been absolutely great every time.
