I don't think the turbo could cause the noise you describe. I've had connecting rod bearings fail (Chrysler) and they knock with a pretty heavy noise. With a normal ignition system, you can pull a plug wire, one at a time (only one off at any time) and isolate which cylinder is the cause. But with the DIC, I don't know how you'd do that test? Also, my only experience with a bad rod bearing was that it would knock worse after different RPM's. You might try and determine if the knock is occurring at crankshaft RPM or half of that (camshaft) RPM? It would be unusual for a 4 cylinder Saab engine to loose a lower-end but possible. If a Rod or Main bearing were to fail, you wouldn't see any debris. You could pull the rod caps off and take a look. Wrist pin ends will knock continuously and not so heavy metallic sound. Piston slap would be something that would gradually come on with wear. BTW, if a Rod bearing is worn out, it will get worse very quickly and ruin (it becomes out-of-round) the crank journal. Wish I could be of more help. Good luck. Hopefully it's simple like a lifter.
