Uni-directional tires must go on one particular side and rotate in one direction, as the arrows indicate. Typically the rubber compound on the inside is softer than the rubber on the outside. This allows the outer wall to stay firm during hard cornering. You could put them on the other side, remounted so that the direction is correct, but the performance and treadlife would be dramatically affected. Asymmetric tires, on the other hand, say "outside" or "inside" on wall. They must be mounted correctly for the same reason mentioned above, but the difference is that they can be rotated to the other side of the car - if you move the tire (mounted on the wheel) to the other side, the outside is still the outside. This is the way that my Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S tires are configured, and I cross-rotate them. So far, so good!
