1. For my 2000 Aero 4-sp auto (2.3 engine) my manual lists Dextron 3 as the recommended fluid. Lots of chatter here about 3309 - is that only for the later 5-speed auto?
*** 3309 is only for the later 5-speed auto.
2. My local indy had the following recommendation for getting as much fluid out as possible : drain the auto oil then run the motor and shift through neutral, drive, reverse for maybe 5-10 seconds each, this apparently pumps another litre or so out but won't harm the box. Sounds scary to me - opinions?
*** I wouldn't do it to mine! Probably wouldn't harm it, but really, to get one more litre out it's not worth the risk.
3. I'm putting a long belt back on as I've heard stories of even worse NVH issues with the short belt. Sounds like the top idler is a potential problem, should I replace it regardless of whether it feels ok or not?
*** Yes, the idler (small ribbed pulley) is the iffy one. Mine was shot after 60k miles whereas the tensioner pulley seemed OK. I am considering putting the long belt back on as well due to slightly more noise.
