I know it's not the whole picture. Given the same automobile parameters, different displacement engines of similar "types" will produce similar MPG. If I threw a 4-cyl into a Mustang instead of a V8, and strapped on the extra weight to even it up, I'd get the same sort of MPG if driven in the same manner. If you managed to get the same HP out of each engine, you'd be sucking down about the same amount of gas.
