You've hit on the exact issue that concerned me, and maybe fuel filters are unique (the part inside the two boxes--one with Saab printing and the other with Bosch--appear identical to the point of having the exact same number and words printed on the part).
I understand that the dealer has to use the "official part", which is why I wouldn't blame them for the pricing (although it seems that the $53 was $7 over the list price); however, $36 on a $10 fuel filter seems like an excessive mark-up for maintaining a parts operation. If I thought that it was a set amount--such as an additional $25 for every part maintained--that wouldn't seem so bad, but I'd guess it's more like a percentage, explaining in part the high cost for Saab parts.
As a part of being competitive, why couldn't Saab use the Bosch labeled parts and just put a label on them with the Saab part number, or better yet how about specifying a Bosch part. Ofcourse, I suppose the manufacturer has some responsibility for maintaining replacement parts beyond was a third-party company has and this may explain the cost.
My posting, as well as the follow-ups, are offered to provoke thoughts on how Saab and GM can be more competitive for customers when it appears that they are on the verge of severe financial crisis.
thanks to everyone that's commented.
