The dealer SMs take their marching orders from SaabUSA bulletins, which are biased around what SaabUSA has chosen to pay for under their new car service plan. That's 5W30 synthetic blend (used to be "Saab labelled", now it's supposed to be Mobil Clean 7500). But that's not what's in the shop manual, it's not what's in the owner's manual, and it's not what they use at the factory.

Your car came from the factory with Mobil 1 0W-40. There are other oils on the market that meet the factory specs (ACEA A3/B3), such as Castrol 0W30 and 5W-40 synthetic, Amsoil 5W40, and weird stuff like "lubro moly". Occasionally you might even run across a 5W30 synthetic blend that meets ACEA A3/B3, (Shaeffer used to make one), but the oil your dealer used and the oil SaabUSA pays for are not among them.

Were you "cheated?" That's an awfully strong term, one I wouldn't use. It's not the ideal oil for your car. A data base of oil analyses is being compiled through the work of Chuck Andrews and Oil Medic, and actually some synthetic blend oils have shown to be adequate on a 5000 mile change interval. Fully synthetic oils were better, but not that much better, and none look like they'd still be working after 10,000 miles. I've seen on test of Amsoil 10W30 with 10,000 miles on it and that oil was past-done-for. Moving forward, I'd recommend you either insist on Mobil 0W40 from your dealer (this is the "warranty" oil for the 9-3SS and '05 and newer 9-5s, so the dealer must stock it), or bring in an oil of your choice that meets ACEA A3/B3. If you are on a budget, Castrol 10W40 synthetic blend might be a choice.
