Rod,
The base you are seeing is a part of the bulb. D1S bulbs differ from D2S in that they come with the observed "base" (which is the ignitor) attached, eliminating the need for a high voltage wire under the hood.
Now,
XenArc or XenStart, Philips or Osram does not matter; they are fully interchangeable. Experts say that the salt composition in the Philips units gives off a slightly bluer light as opposed to the Osram bulbs.
One thing that I would suggest though is *changing both bulbs*! Use time affects hotspot size, color and lumens output. You spent big bucks for a high intensity halide discharge system; change both bulbs! You will notice a goofy imbalance with one new one old. The new units are much brighter. You can send me an email I have blue hue non flickering bulb out of a 03 car with 70K on it that has some life left in it. I'm auctioning off; but I can always pull it and sell to you for the starting bid.
