I think that a lot of the oil posts are for synthetic oil, but I think that maybe a requirement on the v6 but not the 4. I have a Toyota 4 runner with 150k oil changes 5k-7500 regular oil, and that engine is in the sludge prone category too. Also have a 88 jetta with almost 300k and just sold my 89 9000 that had 265k all with regular oil. Also just got my 9-5 4cyl and so far have been using regular oil. it is my opinion that changing your oil every 5-7500 and using the recommend weight and minimum grade(think its api)is important.

Also somebody correct me if I am wrong was the recommended oil change on the 4 cyl not like 10k. That means you wait 10k and then it takes 2k more to get in for an oil change and now you are running 12k oil changes. Thinking that is where the sludge problem comes from.
