It's a common assumption that Saab is better in winter than a BMW. That hasn't been my experience. I have had my bimmer for over 4 years in Canada. I drive it, my wife drives it, we never had any problems with traction using all-season tires in the winter. We drive it within city and on highways most of the time and I take it occasionally for a Sunday drive on the country roads. Again, never once did we have any problems no matter what kind of winter storm we have had. I think part of the resaon is that my bimmer is heavy at almost 4000 lbs and with traction control it can take on anything including ski country.
I have had Saab only one winter and it was very mild one. The car was fine riding 17" Michelin all-season tires but it did feel less stable doing turns on snow than the bimmer. I know it's sounds far-fetched but that has been my experience.
