Hi Folks,

Well it seems I am now a fully-fledged member of the Saab community as I've had my first IDM failure (sounds much less scary than a DIC failure ;-).

Saab AU have not launched the recall, and in fact I had been chewing on writing them an email for a week or two, trying to prod them into action, when Thursday last week I got the yellow light and a dead car. No warning whatsoever.

Local dealer wanted $532 (US$390!) and when I asked about the recall, he said "that's only in Europe" and when I told him he was wrong he politely directed me to talk to Saab AU. Thanks to this list I was able to state the case in a way which gave them not the slightest leg to stand on legally, and I got a call the next day to say that it would be fixed up gratis.
So, a plus mark for fairly quickly coming to the party and fixing it all up for me, but a big black mark for it happening in the first place, if they initiated the recall when the guys in the US did I would not have had the failure.

I was going to buy a spare (sourced cheap from an online source), but when I heard about the recall I didn't bother as I assumed it would all be replaced for me. By the time it failed I would have had no choice other than paying the dealer price as I need the car to be going. Anyhow, a nice new TK3.7 in there now and my pocket not lightened in the process.

My Saab was looking after me though, and it didn't fail a week ago when I was trailering my motorcycle back from Melbourne in the middle of the night, it happened when I was within walking distance from home.

So if there are any Australians on here who have an IDM failure, state the facts and it should cost you nothing. If you paid for your dead IDM, already, I don't see why you should not get a refund based on what has happened in the US. Hopefully they will save everyone the effort (and a lot of bad publicity for perceived unreliability) by doing the recall as per most other markets.

Cheers
Steve
