Modern Saabs have variable displacment compressors that only work as hard as needed. A small compressor for small AC needs and a big compressor for big AC needs, variable displacement. AC on or off is very negligible, hard to tell a differnece. I bet your performance issue has more to do with the heat.
Try switching the AC on and off on the same day. Should be hard to tell the difference.
