I set my sights on another project that didn't need fixing; the obsession set in and now it's too late. The missus isn't too happy about me tearing apart the trunk but I toss and turn at night....must....do.....it.....
I've been stalling the removal of my front doors to fix the window guide, where the rubber gasket slipped off causing rattles, until I can procure the necessary materials for the dampening job.
I'm planning on sound deadening my trunk, front doors and rear parcel shelf with non-asphalt based compressed vinyl dampeners. I'm not planning on going all out bananas on this project and I certainly don't want any tar smell. There are two forms of this material; dampeners that add mass and convert structure borne resonance into low level heat - and - barriers which reflect and reduce sound passing through them. Cascade Audio in Bend Oregon has a few products I'm looking at;
VBlok-2 (VB-2) - compressed vinyl dampener. I will remove the gray trunk liner from the bottom and walls of the trunk, prep surface with rubbing alchohol and adhere sheets of this stuff. I will also line the spare tire compartment. I checked the other day and aside from a few pieces of styrofoam and rubber sheets it's bare metal! I was thinking about approaching this with liquid VB-2 dampener, taking a paintbrush and painting the trunk. However I would need multiple coats to acheive the .5 inch thickness of the sheets. Cascade also produces VB-2 in aerosol can form for small hard to reach places.
VB-3.5 Barrier - This stuff is expensive! It's a lead sheet surrounded by open celled neoprene foam. I don't think I'll end up ordering this because you need to do the whole car in order for this to make a difference, this is the recommended product to reduce road noise inside the cabin.
I also have a Basslink in the trunk, it's secured with two metal screws which are drilled right into the metal trunk bottom. Obviously not the best solution as things rattle and resonate (even at low volumes, nothing earth shattering) I want to add stability to the rear end. The trunk for the low end bass and also add mass to the parcel shelf and the factory 6X9 HK mid-bass subs.
I have to make sure this doesn't get too heavy, but Cascade VB-2 is lighter than asphalt based dynamat alternatives. I don't want to add more than 20-40 lbs overall.
