Your indie might be good at taking old parts off and putting new parts on, but he knows absolutely nothing about oil. So don't listen to a thing he says in that regard.

You have certainly not had good luck with the turbos. The LPT does seems to have more frequently reported problems, but yours are above and beyond. That you do not have maintenance records is a huge problem - I bet if you did have records they'd cover the replacement. I wonder if your engine has other problems - bad PCV system, messed up air intake, clogged passages, etc that are accelerating the turbo failure.

The best synthetic for Saab turbos? You can read copious other posts on this topic, but I'll simply state that Mobil 1 0W-40 or 5W-40 are excellent choices. The 15W-50 is also a good choice if you're in a hot climate. Avoid the 30 weights, as they don't usually meet the most stringent specs that Saab references. Most other readily available brands of synthetic oil are actually made from a heavily processed conventional base and do not generally perform as well as Mobil 1, which is made from a true, man-made synthetic base.
