The $900 was total including parts/labor.
Total parts were:
serp belt $76
serp pulley (only) $50
upper timing tensioner assemby $288
lower timing pulley $87
fluids, etc. for coolant/trans flush $40
I provided the timing belt.
Originally I thought that the squeak was from the serp pulley so I wanted that changed along with the belt, as I had no previous record of the serp belt being changed. I asked for a quote and was told that the pulley would be $50 and a couple of hours labor.
After that the sqeak still persisted. So the next thing was to check the timing tensioner. Bingo that was it. I had an extra timing belt so he changed the tensioner assembly and the lower pulley and put on my extra belt. Since the old belt only had another 20k I figured it was good to put on the new one. I never got a quote for this second go at the squeak.
I understand that the alternative is big $$ if the tensioner failed but it was my diligence to act on the first symptoms of failure.
As far as the cost I really was only trying to benchmark the markup. I was thinking that an average of 56% was a little on the high side.
