Automatic transmission fluid should be pinkish in color not brown at all. It probably should be replaced. It should not smell burned. When the fluid is changed, only half drains out so it should be done driven a short while and then drained and refilled. If it is over full now it is because too much fluid was put in. The noise in first is abnormal and is related to a part (the name which now eludes me) going bad. I have had it in my 9-5 for nearly 100,000 miles. Still has not failed.
