When mine got whacked off, I took the whole unit off the door, mirror and bracket. It's one big piece. The color-keyed panel is held on with a torx screw accessible when the mirror is folded in. There's a torx bolt inside the door (near the hinge) and three (?) more under the trim panel where the mirror controls are. Inside there is also where the connectors are.
I couldn't really find any other way to get the thing off, replacements come as the same fairly massive piece (and they never have your color in stock!) I had no luck finding anything except mirror glass as replcement parts.
I used a $6 "Universal Euro" mirror until I got a replacement, attached through the holes from the original bracket.
