Brake Vacuum Boost Pump Question - sort of.........

If I understand correctly, my 99 9.5 wagon has an electric boost pump located between the battery and the headlight. I can locate the pump and the related hoses.
I have been looking at postings about this pump and someone (I think it is was Dean) said "Later production has a mechanical pump where the distributor used to be."
When I located the vacuum pump on a later model and then looked at the same place on my engine, there is a hole about the size of a 50 cent piece with three screw holes around it and an additional stabilizer bracket, all of which would match up to the later model's pump. As you can imagine, it makes it look like something is missing that ought to be there on my vehicle.
So, if as suggested, the distrubuter used to be there and in later models
the brake boost pump is located there, my question is - is there supposed to be something there covering up that hole? If the distubuter and the mechanical pump are both driven off the cam (through that hole), then shouldn't there be something there to cover up the hole? Is it possible that something is in fact missing on my engine?
Sorry if this is an ignorant question - I am obviously not a mechanic but would greatly appreciate being enlightened.
