Black smoke, stumbling, stalling

Had a problem develop tonight in my 99 9-5 (85k miles).
On accelleration, it will produce a huge amount of black/gray smoke and stumble a bit. If you continue to try to drive, it makes a knocking noise and will stall shortly. No check engine light. It idles fine and seems to drive ok at extremely low speed, like under 1000rpm on the tach.
Any ideas? I'm thinking throttle body or ecu or something like that, but I'm surprised at no check engine light given how bad it is.
I'm wondering also if I could drive it reasonably to the shop by forcing it into limp-home mode by deliberately disconnecting something. It seems like it has a fuel-metering issue but it just doesn't know it's sick.
