What engine do you have and what weight oil. Search the board there is alot out there on what weight you should be running. Might be to thick oil. That would make it slow to turnover, but not sure about the sputtering. If the oil is to thin it can make your check oil light come on. I had a friend with a jetta that went to a quick oil place and they put in 5w-30 intead of 20w-50 and her oil light can on. She took it back and they changed it to the correct oil free of charge. Did not seem to harm the engine but did not drive very far.
