It might only be the cylinder head gasket that is leaking in the right/rear corner, dribbling oil down the side of timing cover making it look like it is the timing cover.
It also depends on how quickly the mechanic came to the conclusion. If they have properly cleaned off the area and driven to car for awhile, and clearly see that the leak is further down the side of timing cover, they are right.
But if they only took a quick look and saw the oil on timing cover, I bet it is the head gasket instead.
That corner has been leaking oil for many years but it got a little bit better in late 2001 when they finally cured the bad cylinder head bolt and head gasket torque problem.
I still see some minor oil leak though from that area even on late 2001 and up engines.
