Check your engine passenger side serpentine accessory belt pulleys, especially the topmost one with grooves. I had replaced this one a year ago, but a few weeks ago the rattling sound you describe started. I was freaking out about the dreaded sludge monster (checking the oil bypass valve, oil pan scrapings, etc.) and imagining my balance shaft gears chewed away!! The sound was like a chain saw chain rolling over the toothed driving and idler gears. Luckily, when I loosened and locked the serpentine belt tensioner, and pulled off the top loop of the belt, the pulley I had replaced was wobbling 3/8" from side to side off axis!! One of the circlips that held the bearing centered in the plastic pulley body had fallen out and disappeared. Thankfully, I had kept the old pulley (made without circlips) and put it in place of the failed one and the sound has disappeared..
I breathed a big sigh of relief, but I still need to do a complete changeout of all the pulleys, as some noise is possibly caused by others wearing out. I will keep these as emergency spares however!! Best of luck.
