A couple months back a pot hole impact broke several of the belts inside my front passenger tire. I've been driving on it without incident for 1500 miles, but it worries me. I'm planning on taking a long road trip, so I want to replace the tire. Money is tight right now, so I'd only want to buy 2 new tires, instead of replacing all 4. I currently have 205/55/R16 Dominator S-rated tires with decent tread left (they came on the car when I bought it used). They don't seem to be the grippiest tires, and they have a low speed rating. So I'm not sure what the best course of action is. Here's what I wonder:

1. If I keep two of my current S-rated tires, do my new tires need to be S-rated as well? Is it a bad idea to have standard touring all-seasons on one axle and higher performance all-seasons (i.e H-rated) on the other axle?

2. The tire stores recommend putting the newest pair of tires on the front wheels, but the manual and what I've read on the forum indicate to put them on the rear wheels. Which is best?

3. I don't have a lot of money to invest into new tires right now, around $250 total for mounting and everything. I want to have good performing all-season tires for a reasonable price. I've looked at some tire stores and Sam's Club--Sam's seems to offer the best prices, road hazard warranty, and installation charges. But they have a crappy selection of tires in my size, and the ones they do have I've never heard of (Dunlop Equals, BF Goodrich Pros, and Eagle GS-H). Anyone know of good tire choices that are easy to find and not too expensive? Is Sears a good place to buy and mount tires? Right now my brain is boggled by all the alphabet soup and options with the different brands of tires.

Thanks!
