There aren't really any noticible symptoms of impending timing belt failure. With the cover on there you can't really look for cracks. The only thing I would look out for are noises coming from that area. As bearings wear out in the tensioners and pullies they usually make noise. Just follow the "change every 60k miles" rule and always change the tensioners at the same time.
I have the exact same car as you and I get white smoke after I start it also. I read that the V6's run very rich when they are just started. I guess there is a stalling problem without this feature. Just because it's hot out doesn't mean that the engine block is warmed up already.
