Ugh! Major Engine Problem (long)

Saturday my wife was driving her 00 9-5 wagon (56K) on the Washington beltway when she noticed the temp guage increasing then she lost power steering and got a whole bunch of warning lights. She was able to make it to a side road. Apprently there was some coolant still in the reservoir but the car was leaking brownish fluid. Of course I was out of town, she called and I asked her to start the car again to check for the oil light, she did and it was not illuminated. A friend confirmed a signifcant oil leak (a nice size puddle beaneath the car), but there is no oil visible high on the engine. I am going to the car in a few hours (an hour from our home!)and hope it is something simple. Anybody got any thoughts on possible source of the leak (other than a leaking drain plug)? The car was in the dealer a week back for the DI casette recall, but apparently ours was good (it had been replaced once already before we got the car) but I did notice that they broke the PCV check valve.
BTW I just did her front breaks and rotors 2 days before and no I didn't touch the engine.
