Yeah, it might not be the greatest thing to check both sides of the relay (pin 85-86) at the same time. It is a possibility that power and ground is bleeding between the two pins through the coil inside the relay, just like it was magnified to the point of turning on the starter when you used the heavier bulb in earlier attempts.

Yes, it could very well be the TWICE not "feeling for" turning on the ground for the relay or it could be something else telling the TWICE not to do it.

Yes, it is a slight possibility that you lost the +30 going to relay. So what you could have done with the spare bulb and wire you have is to hook the bulb up between +30 and body ground.
If that bulb stays lit while the 85 to +30 LED is dead, than you have ruled out a +30 failure.

In your sentence <The single test lamp (85 pin and 30 (+ lead) pin) did NOT LIGHT with key in start position>. What happened to the LED in ON position?

Did the LED lit up in ON but died when continuing to START. If so, it is a possibility for a failing +30 circuit that "crumbles and die" under load but is present when the relay is not energized sending power to starter solenoid.

The quest for the Holy Grail is nothing compared to this.
