Transmission Whine

I have been noticing that my transmission whine in low gears while accelerating or decelerating. It's a 2001 V6 with the 4 Speed auto. It has 160k miles. It needs the fluid replaced so I was going to do that this weekend. What kind do I use? I am going to change it twice rather than paying someone ~$200 to flush it. I found this on http://www.thesaabsite.com in the FAQs section:
Why do I hear a whining noise on acceleration and deceleration?
A whining noise from the transmission during acceleration and deceleration can often be attributed to faulty pinion bearings in the transmission. Generally, what happens is that the bearings begin to get pits in them due to excessive wear or dirty transmission oil. Catching the pinion bearings prior to complete failure will result in less cost during a transmission repair!
Can anyone elaborate a little bit. How much will it be to fix the pinion bearings before the whole thing fails?
Thanks,
Brett
