I pray it isn't the transmission.....

Having recently replaced the front wheel bearings and axles on my '99 9-5 auto. (52k miles) I now discern a muted but distinct high frequency "whistle" from the front end only upon acceleration. Prior to the bearing/axle work my indie mechanic suggested that the "growling" noise coming the cars' front end indicated either a damaged pinion ring within the transmission or faulty wheel bearings and axles. I instructed him to replace the wheel bearings and axles first, leaving the transmission issue for further evaluation. The transmission has always shifted well and the fault light for this component has never illuminated. The tranny produces a soft "whirring" sound in "D" and "R'' which I think-hope-is normal for this model. The new bearings and axles have been transformative. The steering now has considerable heft and she handles far more precisely. The transmission still operates as always save for the whistle alluded to earlier. An optimist would attribute the noise to faulty or improperly lubricated wheel bearings. The pessimist would start shopping for an honest transmission shop. But how many such shops would not try to sell a new or rebuilt unit to the hapless customer in this case whether it is needed or not. This is dangerous ground. Please advise.
