If you know what you're doing, you can get a good deal on eBay. We bought my wife's '00 9-5 wagon a couple of years ago from an eBay seller, the Auto Specialists. I checked the Iris history - extremely routine, all maintenance done, etc. The Carfax was "normal," one owner, lease return. With 38K on the odo and a year and change left on the factory warranty, I decided to buy it sight unseen save for the photos.
Except for a 2-day delay when the auto transporter broke down a couple hundred miles from my house (true story!), the car that rolled off the ramps on my street was absolutely the cleanest used car I've ever seen - exactly as described. A cracked fog light was the only problem, and when I called the seller he offered either to send me a used one for free, or to split the cost of a new one - we ended up doing the latter. I had the PayPal payment in a day.
The wagon has been trouble-free except for the infamous ABS computer failure documented in many posts on this board. eBay is great, but you've got to be very careful, especially with such a major purchase.
